Maternal Beginnings.....Ball

My research shows that the BALL family originated in Somerset, England.  

The earliest family members I can find are William BALL (my 4th G Grandfather) b. abt 1770 in Somerset, England; married on 20 Feb 1798 to Martha WILLIAMS b. 1773 in Winscombe, Somerset, England and they had 1 child that is known, a son, William (1795).  

William BALL b. abt 1795 in Winscombe, Somerset, England (my 3rd G Grandfather); married abt 1820 to Ann TWITT b. abt 1798 and they had 11 children - James (1819), Mary Ann (1821-1821), Sylvester (1825), William (1825), Mary (1826-1863), Louisa (1827), Solomon (1832-1885), George (1833), Ann (1835-1846), Samuel (1838-1839) and Samuel (1842-1843).  William passed away on 29 Sep 1869 at Banwell, Somerset, England and was buried on 2 Oct 1869 at Banwell, Somerset, England.

Solomon BALL b. Dec 1832 in Banwell, Somerset, England (my 2nd G Grandfather); married on 31 Oct 1855 to Frances Victoria HEMMENS b. Mar 1830 and they had 8 children - Elizabeth Ann (1858-1934), Henry William (1860-1863), Frances Victoria (1861-1895), Henry William 'Harry' (1864-1951), Charles Edward (1865-1930), Louisa Caroline (1867-1941), Jane Ann (1870-1950) and Edward James Owen 'James' (1872-1929).  Solomon passed away on 28 Dec 1885 at Sailor's Gully, Near Beaufort, Victoria, Australia and was buried on 30 Dec 1885 at Beaufort Cemetery

Charles Edward BALL b. abt 1865 in Sailor's Gully, Ripon, Victoria, Australia (my 1st G Grandfather); married on 1 Sep 1887 at Main Lead, Victoria, Australia to Mary Julia Margurite POWELL (1863-1938) and they had 6 children - Frances Jane 'Janie' (1888), James Edward 'Jim' (1889-1962), Mary Julia 'Sis' (1889-1974), George Henry Snr (1891-1969), Marguerite Elizabeth 'Madge' (1893-1958) and Charles Arthur 'Arthur' (1894-1969).  Charles Edward passed away on 3 Nov 1930 at Beaufort, Victoria, Australia and was buried on 5 Nov 1930 at Beaufort Cemetery.

Marguerite Elizabeth 'Madge' BALL b. 2 Jul 1893 in Raglan, Victoria, Australia (my Grandmother); married on 11 Aug 1917 at Beaufort, Victoria, Australia to Leslie Frankland 'Les' STRINGER (1896-1985) and they had 6 children - Edward James 'Eddie' (1917-1988) Marjorie Frances 'Marj' (1919-1981), Norman Leslie 'Norm' (1921-liv), Owen Franklin 'Frank' (1923-liv), Beryl Margaret 'Bee' (1927-1988) and Joan Isobel (1933-liv).  Marguerite Elizabeth passed away on 28 Jul 1958 at Red Cliffs, Victoria, Australia and was buried on 30 Jul 1958 at Red Cliffs Pioneer Cemetery.

Marjorie Frances 'Marj' STRINGER b. 4 Oct 1919 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia (my wonderful Mother); married on 12 Jul 1940 to Harold Ernest 'Harry' MORTIMORE (1914-2005) and they had 3 children - Evelyn Margaret (1943-liv), John Leslie (1944-liv) and Janette Elaine 'Jan' (1949-1950).  Marjorie Frances passed away on 11 Feb 1981 at Robinvale, Victoria, Australia and was buried on 13 Feb 1981 at Robinvale General Cemetery.

Maternal Beginnings.....Stringer

My research shows that the STRINGER family originated in Yorkshire, England.  The earliest family members I can find are George STRINGER (my 6th G Grandfather) and his wife Elizabeth UNKNOWN who had a son George who was born in Emley, Yorkshire on 16 Feb 1743.


George STRINGER b.1743 (my 5th G Grandfather) married Sarah UNKNOWN (1751-1813) and they had 8 children - William (1769), Mary (1771), Robert (1773-1833), George (1775), Sarah (1777), Jane (1779), William  (1781) and Ann (1783).

Robert STRINGER b.1773 (my 4th G Grandfather) married Mary ROTHWELL (1777-1827) and they had 10 children - George (1799-1800), George (1801-1841), William (1801-1820), John (1803), Thomas (1808), Harriet (1811), Robert (1812), Margaret (1814-1857), Sarah (1819) and Mary (1822).

George STRINGER b.1801 (my 3rd G Grandfather) married Martha CHADWICK (1800-1841) and they had 8 children - Mary (1826), William (1826-1901), Robert (1828-1899), Gamaliel (1830), John (1835-1901), George (1837), Martha (1837) and Ebenezer (1839).

Robert STRINGER b.1828 (my 2nd G Grandfather) married Maria FRANKLAND (1821-1900) and they had 1 child, or possibly 2 (second child yet to be confirmed) - James Frankland (1855-1917) and ?Thomas (1855).

James Frankland STRINGER b.1855 (my 1st G Grandfather) married Julia Emma COOK (?-1919) and they had 10 children - Millicent (?-?), Amelia Flower (1883-1952), William James 'Will' (1886-1948), Elsie Maria (1888-1982), Ruby May 'Rube' (1890-1982), Charles (1892-1892), Louis (1892-1892), Lena Myrtle (1894-1969), Leslie Frankland (1896-1985) and Edward Frederick 'Fred' (1901-1979).

Leslie Frankland STRINGER b.1896 (my Grandfather) married Marguerite Elizabeth 'Madge' BALL (1893-1958) and they had 6 children - Edward James 'Eddie' (1917-1988), Marjorie Frances 'Marj' (1919-1981), Norman Leslie 'Norm' (1921-liv), Owen Franklin 'Frank' (1923-liv), Beryl Margaret 'Bee' (1927-1988) and Joan Isobel (1933-liv).

The HANSEN's originated in Denmark, but our Frederick William HANSEN 
(my great grandfather) was born on 8 May 1833 in Rostock, Germany (then Prussia) 
of Danish parents, Frederick William HANSEN & Louisa Christina 'Christina' WOOLF.

Frederick arrived in Victoria, Australia, 4 January 1855 aboard the ship ‘Tiptree’.

40 Gore St, Fitzroy in 1876 was the home of the Baptist Minister
and Frederick & Maria were married in the front living room
of the house.  These photos were taken of that house in 2008.

[On Maria's Death Certificate, Maria & Frederick's marriage is listed as having taken place at Mansfield, Victoria 

when she was 18.  They were, IN FACT, according to the Marriage Certificate, married at the home of the 

Baptist Minister, 40 Gore St, Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia.  Other family members believe they were 

married at Jamieson, Victoria on 13 Jun 1863, but I have no idea where that supposition comes from]

1.   Louisa Maria HANSEN b. 31 May 1865 at McMahon's Creek, Warburton, Victoria; married (in a double wedding  ceremony) on 11 Feb 1882 at Emerald Hill (now South Melbourne), Victoria, Australia to Johann Jorgen Ferdinand 'John' JANS and they had 10 children

  

     

2.   Frederick William 'Old Bill' HANSEN b. abt 1866 at Warburton, Upper Yarra, Victoria, Australia; married #1 abt 1889 to Mary Jane WALSH and they had 10 children;  #2 14 Jul 1909 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia to Mary Ann JUDGE and they had 3 children

5.   Alice Maude 'Maude' HANSEN b. 19 Apr 1871 at McMahon's Creek, Victoria, Australia; married on 2 Jul 1891 at East Warburton, Victoria, Australia to James BRANSON and they had 13 children

6.   Robert George 'George' HANSEN b. abt 1872 at Warburton East, Victoria, Australia; married abt 1896 to Esther HARRIS and they had 2 children

7.   Ada Christina HANSEN b. 02 Jul 1876 at McMahon's Creek, Warburton, Victoria, Australia [*My Grandmother*]; married on 25 Mar 1897 at Lilydale, Victoria, Australia to Martin MORTIMORE and they had 11 children

   

8.   Samuel Roderic HANSEN b. 19 Jul 1878 at Warburton, Victoria, Australia; married on 10 Jul 1912 at Tasmania, Australia to Christina Naismith 'Tina' POLSON and they had 2 children

9.   Albert Henry 'Bert' HANSEN b. abt 1880 at Warburton, Victoria, Australia; married abt 1909 to Minnie DON and they had 4 children

12. Ruby HANSEN b. 03 Dec 1886 at Warburton, Victoria, Australia; married on 14 Jan 1907 at Myrtlebrook Farm, Cement Creek, Victoria, Australia to Christopher HARVEY and they had 6 children

FAMILY LIFE

The HANSEN’s lived at the gold diggings at Mansfield, Woods Point, and Reefton/McMahons Creek. At the time of their marriage their address was given as Sale in Gippsland. Frederick & Maria HANSEN established a property known as ‘Myrtlebrook Farm' at Cement Creek, near Warburton, which was one of the first freehold properties selected in the district.   ‘Myrtlebrook Farm' passed into the hands of their 9th child, Albert Henry 'Bert' HANSEN, and he sold it in about 1914 to Lamprieres, shipping agents from Melbourne.  Eventually the property was compulsorily acquired by the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works. and in whose hands it remains to this day.

Frederick HANSEN was one of the group of men who turned the river at the Big Peninsula, anticipating that alluvial gold would be at the low spot but, unfortunately, their dreams of a rich gold find were never realised. Although he owned 'Myrtlebrook Farm' Frederick HANSEN still gave his occupation as that of a Miner. 

It is believed that Frederick & Maria HANSEN were the ones who built, operated and then moved the Reefton Hotel (originally it was the general store, in the times when miners brought in their gold to be weighed on the grocer's scales¹) from it’s original position (It used to be on the opposite side of the road and a mile further up the road) to where it now stands.  It is said to be in it’s present position because they couldn’t get it across McMahon’s Creek..
